Southport 24 Hour Race - 2024
Published 11:52 on 7 Oct 2024
This is a team relay event, were each team sails a 2-man boat round a marine lake for 24 hours, from noon on Saturday to noon on Sunday. The race has a long history, dating back to 1967. RLSC is one of a very small group of clubs which has entered this event every year it has occurred, the race finisher plaques are displayed in the clubhouse.
This year RLSC took part in the race in memory of Geoff Holmes, who initiated RLSC taking part in this event in 1967, we also used the same Enterprise Geoff sailed in on the 50th anniversary of the event, thank you to Bruce and Ian for letting us use their boat again. Geoff's daughter, Karen, was part of our team, she crewed on both days and was crew as the RLSC boat finished the race.
For several of the team members, this was their first time at this event and I am happy to say they all had a great time and are enthusiastic to take part again in 2025. The captain of the winning team described this event as the "Best in the World, it is the only event were club sailors can sail the same course at the same time as Olympic and World Class sailors". I hope more club members will join us next year to sail, help on shore, or volunteer to do safety or other roles for the event.
