4x20 racers - win share of pot o gold! Report, results, and next years plan

Published 18:38 on 18 Oct 2023

Another successful day, despite the weather! It was one of those British days where you get hail, wind, rain, sun, and rainbows all in 30 minutes. It took some bravery and strength to go out in some testing conditions, but after a short storm delay. it was 3, 1, 1, 3, 2, 1 GO!!

If you weren't there you missed out your share of the treasure from under a beautiful double rainbow, everyone got some swag!

This time we had some fun watching the grownups capsize, especially sailors who braved the eye of the storm. And again, everyone made it around the course!

Après-sail we had a games night, with Super Mario, Sonic, pool, table tennis, poker, card, and board games. It was a great atmosphere and good to see a social at the club in full swing. If this sounds like your thing, feel free to come join the race, BBQ, or party next time as you wish.

A note on handicaps

For those new to racing, I thought I would explain handicaps. It's a fact that some boats are faster than other, bigger sails make for faster boat. So this makes unlikely that a topper will beat a laser, for example. (Although the times within a class of boat are comparable) With handicaps and some simple maths, the time of each boat is adjusted to make the results competitive regardless of boat.

As we have been focusing on fun and participation, we haven't spent much time on this, but for race 4 the sprit race, I've worked out a new order, just for fun. The topper sailors will be happy to see they jump up by two places! And with a bit of work, maybe they can make the top 3? I think so!

If you interested in improving your time, help is available!

The future?

These events have been fantastic fun to run, with a lot of positive feedback from every angle, so we plan to carry this format forward into the new year, running it monthly, about 7 meetings over a season with a party after each. If you have enjoyed it... any ideas, feedback or help would be greatly appreciated, both on racing, coaching and social.
