Chernobyl Kids Visit

The Leek group is part of the Chernobyl Children's Project (UK) that brings about 400 children to Britain each year.18 teenagers from this group visited us on Friday and were treated to a very exciting sail followed by a BBQ. It was a real pleasure to see the smiles on their faces and hear the yelps for joy.

In the summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it is important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. Doctors in Belarus say that this boosts the children's immune systems for at least two years, helping them to resist, or recover from, serious illness. It can also significantly reduce the amount of radioactive caesium which has built up in a child's body. Many of the children brought to the UK are in remission from leukaemia or cancer.

A big thank you to all who came and helped on a very worthwhile event.
